Shoreham & Brighton Regatta Report

Despite strong winds , thunder storms and the occasional burst of sunshine, Bexhill rowing club ventured west to race at Shoreham on Saturday and then Hove on Sunday. Staring the day off with a win was Mark mitchell in the senior sculls. Mark was then joined by Andy Bickers, Chris Mizen and Matt Mitchell to win the Vet 40’s with the Vet 50 crew of Dave Jones, Mark Cowling, Clive Bingham and Andy Wilson 2nd. This crew then went on to win their Vet 50 race in fine style. Mark was later joined by Kieran Cahill, Matt Hellier and Doug Holdaway to win the Senior Four race ahead of Phil McCorry, Chris Mizen, Ashley Cahill & Greg Anderson in 4th before Mark & Kieran won the senior pairs with Doug & Matt 4th and Phil & Greg 5th. Greg continued his winning form in the Junior sculls leading from start to finish.
The ladies crew of Georgina Pepper, Abbie Little, Charlie Cooper and Laura Quinn raced both Junior and senior fours where they finished 2nd and 5th respectively. Abbie and Charlie then raced junior pairs finishing 2nd with Laura & Georgina 4th. Charlie then teamed up with Abbie to finish 3rd in the ladies double.
The men’s Junior four of Adam Baker, Will Knapp, Lewis Sealy and Martyn Matt managed a creditable 2nd place in a tough race and 4th in the junior seniors with the A crew of Phil & Nick McCorry, Andy Bickers and Josh Green 3rd. Will then raced the novice scull finished 3rd just behind Josh Green in 2nd. Both pushing for first all the way around the course.
The men’s novice crew of Sam Mitchell, Harry Rummery, Toby Golledge and Kieran Kingsnor finish 5th.
On Sunday, the winds picked up considerably but, due to a north wind, the sea remainder surprisingly flat throughout the day creating some close racing. With the same programme of events, it was up to Mark to start the day off with a win in the senior sculls. not as easy as Saturday, Mark won a hard race by just a matter of a couple of feet with Phil McCorry 4th. Teaming up again in the Vet 40’s, they picked up their 5th straight win with the vet 50 crew, now with Steve Bickers subbing for Dave Jones coming 2nd and a win in their 50’s event.
The ladies Junior four again finished a very creditable 2nd with Maya Cousins subbing for Laura Quinn. They then went on to finish 4th in Senior ladies. Abbie and Georgina picked up 2nd in the ladies Junior pair despite having a crash at the turns costing them the win with Charlie & Maya 5th.
A similar fate was in stall for the junior pair of Lewis & Adam but a re-row was called in their race. They then went on to win their event picking up their first junior win of the season. Lewis & Adam then raced the junior four with Will and Tom Green finishing 4th.
Greg Anderson continued his run of wins by winning the junior sculls with Dan Renner just pipping Phil for 3rd on the line. Greg then sat in the Senior A crew with Mark, Matt Hellier & Chris Mizen and finished 2nd just behind Deal. Greg then teamed up with Mark in the senior pair, winning a tough race and the first senior pairs win for Greg.
The Junior Senior crew of Nick, Josh, Owen Dyson & Dan finished with another 4th and Abbie and Charlie rounding up the day with another 2nd in the ladies double.
The club now have a well earned few weeks off before Folkestone on the 19th June. It won’t be all rest as Mark Mitchell will be racing at Dorney Lake next weekend in the Met Regatta hopping that his performance in the double with Tim Male will earn an automatic entry and seeded for Henley Royal Regatta at the end of June.
